Our 1st Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices For The 2017-2018 School Year
It’s official! Like really! I am a homeschooler! Ok, then… If you’re like duh, we know, well you’re kinda right. But this year to me it’s official. My baby is now school age! Oh, how the time flies! I still remember her laying on the kitchen table on her changing mat swinging her arms from side to side in excitement. Bwaah bwaah! Ok, pull it together Nicole! Well now that I’ve got that out my system, I can get on to share with you, Our 1st Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices For The 2017-2018 School Year.
Before the gist of things, my hope is to first ease into things the first couple of weeks. I don’t want to overwhelm her (too quickly). I am mentally telling myself, the road has just begun. That even though I have all these great books planned out, they would stay on the shelf if I go into it with the wrong mindset. Now let me see me put that into practice! Luckily she finds learning fun, and she reads a lot already. Whew!

Reading
Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons – So As I mentioned in my Our Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum Choices For The 2017-2018 School Year post, this is my second go at this book. It’s one of those you hate to love it, but you got to situations going on I guess. I am presently going through the program with my now 4-year-old. However, I decided to let my eldest do it as well, just in case there are any benefits she can glean from going through it. She does proficiently read at a third-grade level. However, there is always room for improvement in any situation. We’ve started it this summer, so hopefully, by the official school year, we should have completed quite a bit. We would also be continuing with lots of reading and read aloud.
You can also check out my video of how I taught my first daughter to read.

Bible Study
We would be doing this as a group.
- Reading from our favorite children’s Bibles. Like this one.
- My Bible Story Book. I started this Bible study with her during her kindergarten year. This year we would be continuing.
- Jesus Loves The Little Children Song Book
- Bible Dot-to-Dots and Bible Hidden Pictures. Both can be found at the Dollar Tree also.
- Truth and Grace Memory Book
- Learning To Read From The Bible
African-American History
- Look What Brown Can Do by T. Marie Harris and Neda Ivanova
- The Colors Of Us by Karen Katz
- A Kid’s Guide To African-American History
- 100 African-Americans Who Shaped American History
The first two books are easy enough reads and are filled with color, making them more kid-friendly I would be having her read through these a couple of times this coming school year. I would also be including it in a couple of our read aloud. The latter two books, however, I intend to use to find people or topics that we could study together through crafts and other means.
Science
- The Usborne Elementary Science Dictionary
- God’s Design for Life Student And Teacher Preview – by Answers in Genesis– This curriculum is recommended for Grades 3-8. I decided to get a head start. The curriculum is broken down into four main areas of study. With each study area having three sub-areas. The website also recommends the order the books might be studied. The first area of study, God’s Design for Life, comprises of three set of books:
- The Human Body (Text and Teacher Supplement)
- The World of Animals (Text and Teacher Supplement)
- The World of Plants (Text and Teacher Supplement) If Interested, you can purchase these using my link here. (Thanks for your support!)
Art
- The Usborne Step by Step Drawing Book
- A sketch Pad for lots of drawing. She loves drawing and coloring. She already owns tons of coloring books though.
- Arts and Crafts
Social Studies And Geography
I am not going to deep into Social Studies and Geography this year. Keeping these subject areas more on the simple side.
- Working with our Continents of the World Hands-on Craft (Post soon to come of how I made it. Will update with a link soon.)
- 50 Great States Fast-Fact Book
- United States 52 Flash Cards
- DK Workbooks- 1st Grade Geography
- YouTube videos from some of our favorite YouTube learning channels.
Other
As I mentioned in our video, I have these items planned in as we would be having some time during the school year where we would not be able to do our planned lessons.
- What Your First Grader Needs To Know– I love this series! I know, I keep saying that right.
- Grade 1 Brain Quest Workbook– She completed The Grade 1 Brain Quest Workbook, and she enjoyed it. So hopefully we have found a general knowledge practice workbook we could love for years ahead.
- Lots and of playtime!
