My walk with God has been a bumpy one. I needed all the help I could get in trying to transition from a Christian by name to one by walk. And I am still growing. Every bruise so far has been so worth it, and I humbly will follow wherever next he would lead me. I would love to share with you today 10 Practical Tools For Growing In Your Christian Faith.
The following helped in building the foundation of my faith and are still helping as I continue to grow.
10 Practical Tools For Growing In Your Christian Faith
1. The Bible. There is no Greater resource than the source itself. Period. To get to know you, the best person to ask is you. Thus, the best way to know God is to read his spoken word written for us. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3: 16-17:- 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (NIV) There are tons of free online Bibles like Bible Gateway for on the move. Or you can download a Bible app from your carrier’s app store.
2. Bible Dictionary and Concordance. The English grammar can be confusing and easily misunderstood. Simplistically, a Bible dictionary will help keep the word in context, and a concordance will assist in a word-study and finding every occurrence of that word. We use Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary and Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible. Using the same line of dictionary and concordance may be better if you are entirely new to the Bible though. There are also free Bible dictionary’s and concordance online.
3. A Bible Commentary. These can assist in giving insight on the Bible. However, it is imperative you are reading your word yourself to be able to tell when another’s perspective strays from God’s word. We use The Wiersbe Bible Commentary for the Old and New Testament. Again, you can find free resources online.
4. Having an Accountability Partner. For me, that is my husband.
5. Bible Group Study. This can be with your spouse, a church or fellow Christian friends. It can be to read the word together simply.
6. Praise Music. This is a quick ‘pick-me-up’ source. I enjoy Deitrick Haddon, Donnie McClurkin, Mercy Me, Newsboys, Francesca Bertinelli, Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin and praise and worship hymns from back home, to name a few.
7. Thru The Bible with John V. McGee. This is an excellent source. Not for the faint of Heart. But Again, it’s important to read your Bible as well.
8. The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel DVD. He also has a book. However, we watched the documentary. His journey and transformation is a powerful one taken by doing in-depth research.
9. Bible Based and Christian Movies. A fun way to get inspired by the principles of God in a more relaxed fashion.
10. Finding A Church Home. Good reinforcement of the word and uplifting for the week ahead. At this time, we are still trying to find a new church home where we reallocated to, that fits a family with small kids.
