Counting Using Coins And Flashcards-PreK And Kindergarten
Teaching more than one student/grade level as a homeschooler is a balancing act. Currently my three-year old is doing preschool math, while my five-year old is in kindergarten. It is always nice to find different ways to combine some of their learning in a fashion where they are both learning at the level they are at currently. Also, because they are still very young, engaging activities makes the learning process easier for all.
They are both learning about coins presently. This was a nice way of continuing to build their math skills, while incorporating the learning of coins. This is what I focused on for each of them:-
Preschooler (3.7 yrs)
- Matching the words 1-5 to the numbers 1-5. (So a few sight words being done to.)
- Counting objects (at this stage she used any coin she wanted for each group)
- Seeing the numbers presented in different ways.
Kindergartener (5.4 years)
- Practice counting one object at a time (to help her with sometimes miscounting from trying to go to quickly.)
- Count and tell the number of objects (only did up to 15 for this exercise)
- Practice picking out like coins and identifying them
- Spelling of the numbers (she is reading Scholastic level three books, so working on basic spelling)
- Practice writing her numbers (1-15 for this exercise)
I was there to guide them along the way. This activity challenged them both, but not to the point of them getting frustrated.
There was one unexpected good thing I noticed from my kindergartener counting this way. Because she was lining up so many of the same type of coins together, on her own she started comparing them asking questions. One of those questions was ” Why are there different pictures at the back, but the front is the same?” (For the same group of coins) I think that was a good observation/question.
