The official school year is out, and homeschoolers everywhere are either planning or already planned out most of the coming school year. This coming year I will be teaching a kindergartener and a first grader. My youngest is just going to oversee the entire operation, lol. That being said, in this post, I would be sharing with you guys Our Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum Choices For The 2017-2018 School Year.
So before I go listing out books, I want to share my primary focus during this year. Similarly like I did with my eldest, my primary focus is teaching my kindergartener to read, math and reading aloud. Lots of reading aloud! (Which we love by the way!) I would be doing other subjects, but I would be primarily focused on those areas with her. That system worked well with my first, so I am giving it a go again!
A lot of what I will be using this year for kindergarten is different from what I used last year. The main reason, well my girls learn differently. For example, even though I was able to complete enough workbooks with my first daughter for extra practice, I already know I am not getting off that easy this year. She will be terrorized, and well I don’t think I would survive the year myself.
Therefore, this year I would be covering the same main focuses with her, but I made choices I think she will be able to (measuredly) enjoy.

Reading
Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons – Well, this book again, lol. I have to admit, my first go at this book was less than, well we didn’t make it. However, how I taught my first daughter to read is not working with my second. My first daughter currently reads at a third-grade level at six years old. So I don’t believe it’s the system. They just need different tools to bring out that God-given ability. In my humble opinion. Hey, doesn’t that remind you of the moral behind Giraffes Can’t Dance? One of my favorite read aloud by the way. Anyhoo, let me stay on topic, lol. Well, we’re currently doing it, and I intend to finish it this time (fingers crossed!) This book does have a lot of excellent reviews, so maybe it was just me.
Writing
- I Can Write Manuscript (Can be purchased at the Dollar Tree)
- Copy work – I will be giving her simple sentences to copy as the year progresses.
Math
- Math-U-See – Primer
Art
- Finger painting, drawing and just general Arts and Crafts throughout the year
Bible
We would be doing these as a group. I would not be requiring her to memorize anything as yet though.
- Reading from our favorite children’s Bibles. Like this one.
- My Bible Story Book. I started this Bible study with my first daughter. This year we would all be doing it together.
- Jesus Loves The Little Children Song Book
- Bible Dot-to-Dots and Bible Hidden Pictures. Both can be found at the Dollar Tree also.
- Truth and Grace Memory Book
- Learning To Read From The Bible
Geography, History and Science
- She would just be listening in on the reading with my first grader for the most part. We would also enjoy some of our favorite YouTube channels.
Other
- She would be completing her Big Preschool Workbook to ease into kindergarten. She did not do much in this book during the past year. And as she is still 4, I decided we’ll start off with this first.
- What Your Kindergartener Needs To Know (Have I said enough yet that I love this series!!)
- The Super Deluxe Kindergarten Scholar
- My Big Activity Workbook (wipe clean). I enjoy using wipe clean books. They can do them over and over until they master all of the books content!
- Lots and lots of playtime!
