Behavior Warning Chart For Building Discipline In Children

Let me first say, I am loving our new behavior chart! Are the kids transformed into angels and listening to my every word? Ha, I wish! However, it has added enough improvement, where I feel less frustrated when they are at level one billion!

Disciplining children…

This is a simple option to assist in building disciple in younger kids. My older girls are three and five, so this is just on time.

It was an opportunity for the entire family to do work together, so that was definitely a positive.

 

What We Used

• 13 Inch x 35 Inch Thin Piece of Scrap Wood
• Construction Paper
• Glue Stick
• Clear Tape
• Wiggle Googly Eyes
• Writing Materials of Choice (pencils, markers, etc)
• White Spray Paint
• Clothes Pins as Placers

Steps

• Spray paint the wood (If not white), and let dry
• Lay each sheet of construction paper overlapping each other in the way you want them to fall. Put small makings to know the boundaries of your design so that they are not hidden.
• Design each stage of the Behavior Warning Chart For Building Discipline In Children on a separate piece of paper. Do not stick on the googly eyes or faces on yet.
• Glue the sheets down as laid out previously. (Optional: You can do this stage before you design the sheets if confident in your drawing skills. That can ensure your writing stays within limits. However, will be messy if you make an error.)
• Stick on faces and googly eyes unto the chart. Let everything dry.
• Optional-choose how to display. We drilled two small holes to the top and used Vinyl Coated Wire Clothesline to hang it. Very sturdy.
• Let the kiddos decorate their placer of choice.

 

Some benefits I’ve noticed since incorporating it a few weeks ago:

1. The kids are talking about it during the day. That to me is most important because kids talk about what they are into A LOT. So I feel confident it’s having some impact.
2. It has been an eye-opener for me. It’s helping me to work on their listening skills more.
3. They remind each other to behave during the day. That’s because neither wants to be left out, but I’ll take all the help I can get!
4. They are actually making an effort. Now that effort is relevant to a three and five-year-old listening skills. However, they have improved from a very quick descent to the red area the first few days, to actually staying in the green area.
5. It provides them a means of measuring their progress. I think it is good that from an early age, without being too militant, they can start to understand cause and effect.
6. They remind me EVERY morning to put them back at the start. Who new! They are helping me manage them! They look forward to starting over every day. Win, win!

I must say, I highly recommend this chart for families with little kids! If only I knew about it sooner! It is working well with the kids and I love having it as a new routine in our home. It has actually made a little name for itself because the kids come running out in the morning when they awake to make sure they have been moved to start. And let me not forget, otherwise, my two little wardens ensure I drop everything urgently to go move their clips where it needs to be! The joys!
